Club Presidents Through The Years
Since receiving its charter on March 27, 1925, the Rotary Club of Clayton has been blessed with more than a century of dedicated leaders who have given their time, talents, and hearts in service to Rotary, our community, and the world. Each President has helped shape our Club’s story, building on the foundation laid by those who came before while preparing the way for those who would follow. The names listed below represent more than a succession of officeholders—they reflect a remarkable legacy of commitment, fellowship, and Service Above Self that has endured for over 100 years.
For much of Rotary’s early history, membership was limited to men. That changed in 1987, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Rotary Clubs could not exclude women from membership based on gender. This historic milestone opened the door to a new chapter in Rotary’s story, bringing greater diversity, new perspectives, and even more opportunities to serve. Since women became eligible for Rotary membership, the Rotary Club of Clayton has proudly been led by seven women Presidents, each bringing her own unique vision, leadership, and spirit of service to our Club. As our number of female members continues to grow, so too will the opportunities for women to take on leadership roles and add their names to this distinguished list.
Our history also includes a few remarkable examples of Rotarians stepping forward when their Club needed them most. An asterisk (*) indicates an instance when a sitting President had to step down in the middle of his term. In one such extraordinary circumstance, our first female President stepped forward to complete the remainder of that President‘s term—before beginning her own scheduled year as President. As a result, she became not only the first woman to serve as President of the Rotary Club of Clayton, but also the first—and only—President to serve one-and-a-half consecutive years in office. Her willingness to answer the call of service exemplifies the leadership and dedication that have characterized our Club throughout its history.
A double asterisk (**) marks another unique chapter in our Club’s story. Past President Leigh Hudson (1989–1990) stepped forward when a sitting President had to leave office halfway through his term. Leigh completed the remainder of that year and then continued into the following year as President. With that additional service, Leigh became the only President in the history of the Rotary Club of Clayton to serve a total of two-and-a-half non-consecutive years as Club President.
These stories remind us that Rotary leadership is not simply about holding an office—it is about stepping forward when needed, embracing opportunities to serve, and ensuring the Club’s work continues. From our charter in 1925 to today, the Presidents of the Rotary Club of Clayton have carried forward a proud tradition of leadership and service. Their collective legacy is woven into the history of our Club, our community, and the countless lives Rotary has touched. And as we look toward the future, we celebrate not only where we have been, but also the Rotarians yet to come who will carry the torch of Service Above Self into the next century.
